3 charged with murder in Sacramento gunbattle that killed 6, injured 12 – KCRA Sacramento

The shooting took place in Sacramento’s central entertainment district as bars and nightclubs were closing. Over 100 shell casings were recovered.

Smiley Martin, Dandrae Martin, and Mtula Payton have been charged with three counts of murder in the deaths of Johntaya Alexander, Melinda Davis, and Yamile Martinez-Andrade.

Three men face charges related to using a fully automatic gun, being a felon in possession of a fully automatic rifle, and committing crimes while out on bail. They are also eligible for capital murder charges. Three people have killed bystanders in a shooting between rival gang members. The other three were not considered victims because of a California law that holds all participants responsible for any bystander deaths.

Relatives of the victims have described them as fun and energetic young men.

The Sacramento Police Chief and Schubert described the shooting as a gun battle between rival gangs. Several videos that surfaced since the early morning April 3 shooting have also hinted at gang ties.

Police believe that five people fired guns during the shooting on K Street. Over 200 videos were submitted to the Sacramento Police Department related to this incident.
