35 Killed Including 22 Children

Most of the children who died at a daycare in Thailand were stabbed to death in one of the world’s worst child murders in recent history, police said.

Reuters reported that children at the daycare center ranged in age from two to five years.

According to police, the attacker was a former police officer who was dismissed last year over drug allegations and was being tried for drugs.

Police spokesperson Paisal Luesomboon told Thai PBS the man had been in court earlier in the day and had then gone to the daycare center to pick up his child.

According to Paisal, he started killing when he didn’t find his child. “He started shooting, slashing, killing children at Uthai Sawan,” Paisal said.

“From the moment I stepped into the scene, it felt harrowing,” Piyalak Kingkaew, who is heading the first responder team, said.

In a large van, police said 22 bodies were found, mainly children, and the bodies were being transported to Udon Thani, 50 miles away, for autopsies.

“He was heading toward me and I begged him for mercy, I didn’t know what to do,” one distraught woman told Thai PBS.

“When the kids were sleeping, he shot at the door without saying anything,” another woman said.

The attacker’s weapon was a 9 mm pistol obtained legally, police said.

Police in Thailand said the perpetrator had attempted to break into the premises and mostly killed with a knife.

” He got out and started killing anyone he met along the way with a gun or knife until he got home. We surrounded his house and found that he had committed suicide,” Damrongsak Kittiprapas said.

It was reported that a few children had survived, but no details were given.

Approximately 30 children were present at the facility – a pink, one-story building surrounded by a lawn and small palm trees – when the attacker arrived, fewer than usual since heavy rain had kept many away, according to district official Jidapa Boonsom, who worked nearby.

” Around lunchtime, the shooter shot four or five childcare center officials,” Jidapa told Reuters.

Jidapa said the attacker forced his way into a locked room where children were sleeping. According to her, a teacher who was eight months pregnant was also stabbed to death.

In terms of the number of children killed by a single individual, this massacre is one of the worst. In 2011, Anders Breivik killed 69 people, mostly teenagers, at a Norwegian summer camp, while 20 children were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown in 2012, 16 at Dunblane in Scotland in 1996, and 19 at a school in Uvalde, Texas this year.

In 2004, 186 children were killed by hostage takers at the Beslan school hostage crisis in Russia.
