9-Month-Old Baby Murdered In His Stroller During Drive-By Shooting

A young man who police believe shot and killed a 9-month-old baby has been arrested. He faces homicide, attempted homicide and gang enhancement charges.

Merced Police arrested a 17-year male after a fatal drive-by shooting and teamed up with the Gilroy Police to arrest the alleged shooter. No date has been set yet for Motshwane’s arraignment.

Police said that the 9-month-old baby was killed when a vehicle pulled up near them and someone in the vehicle fired shots. However, the shooting did not happen at random. The baby was not the intended target of the shooting.

After investigating the situation further, authorities believe that the drive-by shooting was gang-related. There was a target that the shooter had in mind, and t wasn’t the little baby sitting innocently in his stroller. It was a man that was accompanying the child.

The shooting happened in the 1200 block of Q Street while the mother was walking her child in a stroller with her boyfriend, police said.

Detectives with the Merced Police arrested a 17-year male after discovering the suspect vehicle was a maroon Chevy Trailblazer. They then arrested the alleged shooter, who was about 90 miles west of Merced in Gilroy.

The man that was detained for the murder of the child was Daevon Motshwane of Merced. Police believe that he was behind the wheel at the time of the murder, and that he has king ties in the area that prompted him to participate in this heinous crime.

Police found the mother and her child at a McDonald’s, and the infant was suffering from a gunshot wound. The child died at the scene.

Loved ones are at a loss that any kind of conflict could result in a life lost so soon. The baby’s mother expressed sorrow over the fact that her son wouldn’t even be able to celebrate his first birthday.
