A magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck the country’s east on Wednesday, killing more than 1,000 people and wounding many more. The quake registered at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), according to USGS, which designated it at yellow alert level.

In neighboring Khost province, 25 people were killed and several others were injured, and five people were killed in Nangarhar province, according to the disaster management authority. Photos show houses turned to rubble with only a wall or two still standing amid the rubble.

Almost half of Afghanistan’s population are experiencing acute hunger, and the country’s economy has gone into freefall following the chaotic US withdrawal from Afghanistan last year.

The Taliban held an emergency meeting on Wednesday to organize providing transportation to the injured and material aid to the victims and their families, a Taliban spokesperson said.

Afghanistan’s Deputy Minister of State for Disaster Management called for foreign aid and said 100,000 AFN ($1,116.19) would be paid to families of those killed in the earthquake.

The World Health Organization (WHO) is providing medicine, trauma services and conducting needs assessments in Afghanistan, but a WHO official told CNN that logistics were stretched and more resources were being pushed as the situation needed.

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif extended condolences to the people of Afghanistan and offered support in this time of need.

Afghanistan has a long history of earthquakes, many of which happen in the mountainous Hindu Kush region that borders with Pakistan.
