A man threw pipe bombs and fired at police during a chase

LANSING, MI — The Jackson Police Department has unveiled new footage capturing a dramatic vehicle chase that culminated in a deadly police shooting and the discovery of pipe bombs earlier this month.

In one particularly intense video, both the suspect’s minivan and a police car come to a halt, followed by a barrage of gunfire—at least 70 shots—in just 30 seconds.

The incident began around 4:30 p.m. on Nov. 6, when authorities allege that Jacob Austin Hikes, 31, shot his brother in Lenawee County. A tracking device led officers to the suspect’s maroon van on Cooper Street in Jackson.

The pursuit escalated into a high-speed chase, during which multiple shots were fired. While several homes and vehicles were struck by gunfire, no injuries to bystanders were reported.

Adding to the chaos, the suspect reportedly hurled pipe bombs from his vehicle. This was confirmed when six additional pipe bombs were discovered inside the van. A bystander’s video also captured what appeared to be an explosion in front of a police car during the chase.

At approximately 5:41 p.m., a Jackson Police Department sergeant was hit by a bullet at the intersection of Van Dorn and Elizabeth Street. The bullet passed through his arm and torso. He was transported to a local hospital and is reported to be in good condition.

Law enforcement managed to stop the suspect after exchanging gunfire. Officers attempted life-saving measures, but the suspect was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

The incident has sparked discussions about law enforcement tactics and public safety, as investigations continue into the sequence of events and the suspect’s motives.
