Domestic Violence Leads Retired Officer To Murder Two Women He Was Related To
The suspected shooter has been identified as Richard Colon Crowder, 60, of Henrico. Police confirmed Crowder is a former employee with the Henrico County Police Division. He was an officer in the K-9 unit when he retired in 2014.
Police said Crowder held a barricade situation inside his home for nearly nine hours before being taken into custody. Henrico authorities had to work with the county, the Virginia State Police, and The FBI to get Crowder to come out and surrender. They then discovered the bodies of two women inside the home.
Police said the standoff was domestic-related and all three people were related. Crowder was charged with two counts of second-degree murder and three counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
His first court appearance was delayed after several judges recused themselves for a potential conflict of interest.
The victims are Diane Crowder and Carrie Szaksz. A GoFundMe was created for Diane and Carrie, who were described as selfless and as people who helped others. The proceeds will be used for funeral expenses for the women and Alex, Diane’s son who is about to graduate from high school with his mother and sister gone.
