NEW ORLEANS, LA – A community is in mourning after a beloved local business owner was tragically killed in an armed robbery on New Year’s Eve. The incident took place at a convenience store in New Orleans East, a fixture in the neighborhood for over two decades. Family and friends gathered for a vigil to honor the life of Tan Vu, a woman remembered for her generosity and warmth.
At the vigil, somber faces filled the room as community leaders, including a lieutenant from the New Orleans Police Department and Councilman Oliver Thomas, offered condolences and support. The gathering served as a testament to Vu’s profound impact on those around her.
Mai Vu, the victim’s daughter, shared poignant memories of her mother, reflecting on the familial and community bonds forged within the walls of their store, Via My Supermarket. “She was a selfless person who welcomed everyone with open arms,” Mai recounted, her voice filled with emotion. The store had been a second home, a place where customers were more like family, and where laughter and stories were exchanged daily.
Returning to the store for the first time since the tragedy, Mai struggled with a flood of emotions, recalling both her childhood memories and the night that changed everything. “It’s overwhelming to be here again, where the best and worst moments of our lives have unfolded,” she admitted.
According to police reports, the robbery occurred around 6 p.m. Two men entered the store and began stealing cigarettes. In a heartbreaking twist, Tan Vu was shot by one of the suspects. Her children believe that their mother, known for her kindness, might have willingly given away the items if asked.
Despite the heartache, the family has been buoyed by the outpouring of support from the community. Mai holds onto cherished memories, including one of the last family gatherings where her mother, true to form, cooked a large meal for everyone. “That’s who she was—always making sure everyone was cared for,” Mai said.
As the family grapples with their loss, they are determined to preserve Tan Vu’s legacy. Plans are underway to keep the store open, a decision they believe aligns with her wishes. “She was a part of this community, and we want to honor that,” Mai emphasized.
Efforts to obtain additional information from the New Orleans Police Department regarding potential suspects have been unsuccessful as of now. The investigation continues, leaving the family and community hopeful for justice.
