SANTA CLARA, Calif. – San Francisco 49ers’ running back Christian McCaffrey has been managing Achilles tendon issues in both legs, as confirmed by head coach Kyle Shanahan during a recent press call.
McCaffrey sought treatment for bilateral Achilles tendinitis in Germany. Shanahan explained that the injury began in one Achilles tendon and affected the other due to overcompensation.
After participating in a week of training camp practices, McCaffrey was sidelined with a calf condition announced by Shanahan on August 6. Despite returning to practice a month later, he missed the 49ers’ season opener against the New York Jets and was declared inactive again due to worsening conditions in the following week.
Subsequently, McCaffrey was placed on injured reserve before the Week 2 game against the Minnesota Vikings, with no clear timeline for his return to the field. While he is not eligible to play until after the game against the Arizona Cardinals, his comeback remains uncertain.
Traveling to Germany for treatment, McCaffrey watched from the sidelines as the 49ers secured a 30-13 victory over the New England Patriots at Levi’s Stadium. Shanahan indicated that the team anticipated McCaffrey beginning more intense workouts in the upcoming week.
The running back, who earned recognition as the NFL Offensive Player of the Year last season, is coming off a stellar performance with 1,459 rushing yards, 14 touchdowns, and contributions in the passing game with 67 receptions for 564 yards and seven touchdowns.
As McCaffrey works towards recovery, the 49ers and fans eagerly await his return to the field, hoping for a seamless transition back into the lineup.
