This launch introduces three new models to Microsoft’s Phi family: Phi 4 mini reasoning, Phi 4 reasoning, and Phi 4 reasoning plus. Each model emphasizes improved reasoning abilities, a critical feature for effectively tackling complex challenges. These permissively licensed models aim to support developers creating AI applications that can function efficiently in lower-resource environments.
Phi 4 mini reasoning is notable for its design, being trained on approximately one million synthetic math problems sourced from DeepSeek, an AI startup in China. With around 3.8 billion parameters, this model is targeted for educational purposes, facilitating interactive learning experiences on devices with limited processing power.
The Phi 4 reasoning model boasts 14 billion parameters and integrates high-quality data from various web sources, along with curated examples from the aforementioned o3-mini. Microsoft suggests this model excels in mathematics, science, and programming tasks, enhancing the toolkit for developers focused on these fields.
Additionally, Phi 4 reasoning plus represents an evolution of the company’s earlier Phi-4 model, optimized for accuracy in specific applications. Internal evaluations indicate that it closely matches the performance of R1, a significantly more complex model with 671 billion parameters. Notably, preliminary testing shows that Phi 4 reasoning plus equates to o3-mini in the OmniMath assessment, a measure of mathematical proficiency.
Microsoft emphasized that these new models are crafted to balance size and performance. In a recent blog post, the tech giant remarked that through specialized training techniques such as distillation and reinforcement learning, these models achieve strong reasoning capabilities while remaining efficient enough for real-time applications.
