Airbag Alert: BMW Recalls 390,000 Vehicles Due to Explosive Defect Leading to Serious Injury or Death

Washington, D.C. – BMW of North America is recalling over 390,000 vehicles in the United States due to potentially dangerous airbag inflators that could explode, posing a serious risk of injury or even death to drivers and passengers.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that the recall affects various BMW models, including the 3 Series Sedan and Sportswagon vehicles manufactured between 2006 and 2012. The issue stems from the replacement of the original steering wheel with a sport or M-sport steering wheel equipped with a Takata inflator.

If the defective inflator explodes, it could release sharp metal fragments that may cause serious harm to individuals inside the vehicle. Despite the alarming potential consequences, BMW has not received any reports of accidents or injuries related to this specific issue in the United States.

As a precautionary measure, BMW dealers will inspect and replace the driver’s airbag module free of charge for affected vehicle owners. Letters notifying owners about the recall are set to be sent out on August 23, and owners can contact BMW customer service or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for further information.

The safety of drivers and passengers remains a top priority for car manufacturers and regulatory agencies, highlighting the importance of addressing potential safety risks promptly. The collaborative effort between BMW and the NHTSA to address this airbag inflator issue underscores the commitment to ensuring the safety of motorists on the road.

Vehicle recalls serve as essential safety measures to prevent accidents and injuries caused by defective components, demonstrating the ongoing efforts to prioritize consumer safety in the automotive industry. By promptly addressing potential safety issues like the faulty airbag inflators in BMW vehicles, car manufacturers aim to uphold the highest safety standards and protect drivers and passengers from harm.
