BIRMINGHAM, Alabama – The football community at Alabama A&M University is mourning the loss of Medrick Burnett Jr., a redshirt freshman linebacker who tragically passed away after sustaining a head injury during a game against Alabama State in October. The Jefferson County coroner’s office in Alabama confirmed the devastating news, stating that Burnett died at 5:43 p.m. local time on Wednesday evening. He had been hospitalized at UAB Hospital since the injury occurred on October 26. The exact cause of death was not disclosed.
Originally from Lakewood, California, Burnett began his football career at Grambling State University in Louisiana before transferring to Alabama A&M. During his time on the team, he played in seven games and recorded five tackles, including three against Austin Peay.
Alabama A&M had mistakenly announced Burnett’s death prematurely on Tuesday evening, only to retract the statement after learning that he remained alive. The school’s athletic department had initially received information from a family member regarding Burnett’s condition, but upon further investigation with a hospital representative, they found out that he was still alive.
Despite the rollercoaster of emotions, the university expressed regret for the false information but was grateful to know that Burnett was in stable condition. A GoFundMe page set up for him had already raised over $48,000 by Friday, demonstrating the outpouring of support for the young athlete and his family during this difficult time.
It is a tragic loss for the Alabama A&M community, as they remember Burnett as a dedicated player who left a lasting impact on the team. The university will continue to honor his memory and provide support for his loved ones as they navigate through this heartbreaking ordeal.
