Los Angeles, California – Amazon workers in multiple countries are gearing up for strikes during the busy pre-Christmas shopping period to demand better pay and working conditions. The planned protests are set to take place between Black Friday and Cyber Monday in over 20 countries, including the United States.
Organized by UNI Global Union and Progressive International, the “days of resistance” seek to hold Amazon accountable for labor abuses, environmental degradation, and threats to democracy. The goal is to show that workers standing together can have a powerful impact, despite the company’s efforts to resist change.
Countries participating in the strikes include the U.S., where employees in major cities are expected to join in, as well as the U.K., France, Germany, Japan, Brazil, India, and Turkey. The workers will be supported by various unions, anti-poverty groups, and garment worker rights organizations in their fight for justice.
Amazon has responded to the planned strikes by accusing organizers of spreading misinformation and promoting a false narrative. The company asserts that it offers competitive pay, benefits, and opportunities to its employees and provides a safe working environment.
This year marks the fifth consecutive year of holiday season strikes against Amazon. The organizers are specifically highlighting mistreatment of workers, such as in New Delhi, India, where hundreds of employees will rally for fair treatment following incidents during a heatwave.
UNI Global Union’s General Secretary emphasized the global nature of the movement, stating that workers worldwide are united in demanding fair treatment, respect for fundamental rights, and an end to abuse of power by the company. The message behind “Make Amazon Pay Day” is one of resistance against exploitation and corporate intimidation.
