HARRISBURG, Pa. – The Pennsylvania Governor’s Mansion was the scene of a terrifying incident as a man broke in during the night, causing a fire that resulted in significant damage and forced Governor Josh Shapiro, his family, and guests to evacuate during the Jewish holiday of Passover. The suspect, identified as Cody Balmer, 38, was arrested after setting the fire and reportedly planned to harm Governor Shapiro with a small sledgehammer. Fortunately, firefighters were able to extinguish the flames without any reported injuries. Balmer was taken into custody following his attempt to evade the authorities in Harrisburg.
Authorities revealed that Balmer bypassed security measures by climbing over a 7-foot iron fence equipped with security cameras. He then proceeded to break into the southern wing of the mansion, where he set a fire using a homemade incendiary device made from gasoline-filled beer bottles. The fire caused extensive damage, charring various items in the room including walls, tables, serving dishes, and a piano. Despite being inside for a short time, Balmer managed to escape before authorities were able to apprehend him.
Balmer now faces serious charges, including attempted murder, terrorism, aggravated arson, and aggravated assault. According to a police affidavit, he harbored animosity towards Governor Shapiro, although the motive behind his actions remains unclear. Balmer has a history of criminal charges, including assault, theft, and forgery, with some cases still pending. Following his arrest, Balmer was taken to a hospital for treatment unrelated to the incident or his apprehension.
Governor Shapiro, a prominent figure in the Democratic Party and potential White House contender, was at the residence with his family and guests celebrating Passover when the attack occurred. Described as a devoted family man with a strong connection to his Jewish faith, Shapiro has emphasized the importance of his religious beliefs in his personal and political life. The attack took place during the sacred holiday of Passover, adding further significance to the alarming incident at the governor’s residence.
As the investigation into the break-in and arson continues, authorities are working to determine how Balmer managed to enter the heavily guarded premises undetected. The Governor’s Mansion, a symbol of Pennsylvania’s leadership and history, serves as the backdrop for this shocking event that disrupted the peaceful observance of a cherished religious holiday. Governor Shapiro’s commitment to his faith and family underscores the resilience needed to overcome such senseless acts of violence.
