Autopsy Revelations: Gene Hackman’s Secret Health Struggles and Wife’s Mysterious Illness Uncovered

Santa Fe, New Mexico — Final autopsy reports have shed light on the circumstances surrounding the deaths of acclaimed actor Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa. The findings reveal critical health issues that contributed to their passing.

According to the reports, Hackman, who was 95 years old, suffered from severe heart disease, which included a history of congestive heart failure and a range of heart surgeries. He had undergone an aortic valve replacement and received a pacemaker in April 2019. Records indicate that on February 17, the day he likely died, the pacemaker detected an abnormal heartbeat. Additionally, the report found a low level of acetone in his system, suggesting he had not consumed food for several days before his death. Comprehensive tests showed no presence of alcohol or illegal drugs.

The medical examination also revealed that Hackman’s carbon monoxide levels were less than 5%, a figure considered normal. The main causes of death listed were severe heart disease, with advanced Alzheimer’s disease identified as a contributing complication.

In contrast, the autopsy for Arakawa detailed a different medical issue. The 66-year-old died from hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, a rare and serious illness spread primarily through contact with infected rodent droppings. A major finding in the report indicated that her lungs were filled with fluid. Further examination uncovered a mild thickening of the blood vessels leading to her heart and other parts of her body.

Arakawa’s tests returned negative for both COVID-19 and the flu, and there were no signs of trauma. While her body exhibited normal carbon monoxide levels, it did show positive for caffeine, with no traces of alcohol or controlled substances.

Prior to her death, Arakawa had been researching symptoms related to viral illnesses such as COVID-19 and the flu. Health records revealed that she sought medical help from a clinic on February 12, but ultimately did not receive any treatment.

In a significant detail, Hackman tested negative for hantavirus, highlighting the distinct nature of the health challenges faced by the couple.

Married since 1991, Hackman and Arakawa were known for their private lifestyle. Their bodies, alongside that of their deceased dog, were discovered by maintenance workers on the afternoon of February 26. The findings have triggered an emotional outpouring from fans and friends, reflecting on the couple’s legacy and their contributions to the arts.
