Melbourne, Australia – A 17-year-old has been arrested and charged after attempting to board a plane with a shotgun and ammunition at Avalon Airport in Melbourne. The incident, which took place as the aircraft was preparing to depart for Sydney with 160 passengers on board, was captured on video by witnesses who saw the suspect being subdued by passengers and crew members.
Authorities believe the teenager breached a security fence to access the airport tarmac before climbing the steps to the plane, where he was apprehended by passengers near the front door. The unidentified 17-year-old faces multiple charges, including unlawfully taking control of an aircraft, endangering the safety of the flight, and making a bomb hoax.
Police had to bring in a bomb specialist to search a car and two bags located near the scene of the incident. Video footage showed a passenger restraining the suspect, while a member of the ground crew and a pilot removed a utility belt containing tools from the teenager. The pilot also kicked away the shotgun that the suspect was carrying.
Superintendent Michael Reid commended the passengers for their bravery in overpowering the suspect, preventing any injuries during the incident. Although the motive behind the teenager’s actions remains unclear, authorities are in contact with counterterrorism police to investigate further.
Jetstar, the budget airline operator at Avalon Airport, expressed gratitude to the customers who assisted the crew in managing the situation. The airport has since reopened, with CEO Ari Suss stating they are working closely with authorities to address the incident.
Passenger Barry Clark described the suspect as appearing agitated and dressed like an airport worker. Despite the unsettling situation, the swift action taken by passengers and crew members ensured the safety of everyone on board. The teenager is now in custody and will appear in youth court to face the charges brought against him.
