VENICE, ITALY – After thirty-six years since the release of the classic supernatural comedy “Beetlejuice,” renowned filmmaker Tim Burton and lead actor Michael Keaton reunite to present the highly anticipated sequel “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” at the Venice Film Festival. The follow-up film had its gala world premiere after an earlier screening for members of the press.
During a press conference, Burton, alongside his star-studded cast including Keaton, Jenna Ortega, Winona Ryder, and others, shared insights into the making of the sequel. Burton expressed his surprise at the continued popularity of the original “Beetlejuice,” stating that he never fully understood its success, making this sequel a particularly personal project for him.
Despite the passage of time, Burton, Keaton, and other original cast members returned for “Beetlejuice 2,” joined by newcomers who embraced the spirit of the film. The plot follows the Deetz family through three generations as they navigate unexpected challenges and encounter the mischievous demon Beetlejuice once again.
Keaton praised the uniqueness of the film, emphasizing the rare opportunity to be part of a project that is entirely original. The cast, both old and new, brought a fresh dynamic to the sequel, elevating the story to new heights.
“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” marks Burton’s latest venture following the success of his “Wednesday” series on Netflix, starring Ortega. While the Netflix series did not directly influence his decision to revisit “Beetlejuice,” Burton admitted feeling re-energized by the show’s reception.
As the international premiere of “Beetlejuice 2” approaches, Burton remains grateful for the opportunity to create a film close to his heart, surrounded by a dedicated team. When asked about the possibility of a third installment in the franchise, Burton humorously dismissed the idea, citing the long gap between the first two films.
The Warner Bros. production is set to debut internationally in early September following its out-of-competition screening at the Venice Film Festival. The event, running until September 7, promises to showcase a diverse selection of films and talent from around the world.
