Columbus, Ohio — Big Lots is making a significant comeback with plans to reopen over 70 locations across 13 states on May 15. This surge follows an earlier reintroduction of 60 stores just two weeks prior, as part of a strategic expansion that began with nine store openings in early April.
These upcoming openings are part of a broader initiative announced by the retailer earlier this year, which involves a phased approach to reestablishing its presence in various markets. The recent sales transition to Gordon Brothers Retail Partners has catalyzed this expansion, highlighting a new chapter for Big Lots. Variety Wholesalers, which acquired 219 stores along with two distribution centers, is keen to revitalize the brand by offering a wider range of products, including apparel for the whole family.
The May openings will spotlight stores in states like Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and Michigan, among others, providing customers with more access to affordable household goods. “We’re excited to breathe new life into the Big Lots! brand, ensuring shoppers can find great deals and familiar brands,” said Variety Wholesalers CEO Lisa Seigies.
In addition to Variety Wholesalers’ majority stake, other retailers have also announced plans to purchase former Big Lots locations. Ocean State Job Lot, based in Rhode Island, revealed plans in March to acquire 15 stores in the Northeast, covering states such as New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Earlier, Ollie’s Bargain Outlet disclosed intentions to take over 40 of the retail chain’s locations.
This resurgence reflects a broader trend among discount retailers adapting to consumer demand for affordability amidst economic challenges. With consumers increasingly seeking value, the revival of Big Lots underscores a competitive retail landscape focused on budget-friendly options.
As the company moves forward, stakeholders and consumers alike will be watching to see how the revitalized Big Lots performs in this changing market. The reopening of these stores aims not only to capture new customers but also to restore loyalty among existing shoppers who have long appreciated the brand’s offerings.
