Sydney, Australia – Renowned actor Cate Blanchett, famous for her impressive performances in films such as “The Aviator” and “Blue Jasmine,” recently disclosed to the media in the UK that she is contemplating retirement from acting in the near future.
During an interview with Radio Times, Blanchett expressed her uncertainty about continuing to identify as an actress, stating, “It’s because I’m giving up… My family roll their eyes every time I say it, but I mean it. I am serious about giving up acting. [There are] a lot of things I want to do with my life.”
The Australian star made these revelations ahead of the BBC Radio 4 broadcast of an adaptation of Wallace Shawn’s play, “The Fever,” marking Blanchett’s first foray into radio plays. The storyline revolves around a woman of privilege who falls ill while visiting an impoverished foreign country, leading her to reflect on her impact on the world.
Blanchett, a two-time Oscar winner, has recently appeared in projects such as Alfonso Cuarón’s series “Disclaimer” on Apple TV+ and Steven Soderbergh’s film “Black Bag,” which premiered in March and features Michael Fassbender alongside Blanchett.
Additionally, the acting icon recently concluded a successful five-week theatrical run at the Barbican in London, starring in Chekhov’s “The Seagull.” She has completed filming for Jim Jarmusch’s upcoming project “Father, Mother, Sister, Brother,” set to release in 2025 opposite Adam Driver, and is currently working on “Alpha Gang” with the Zellner brothers.
In her candid interview, Blanchett also shared her discomfort with fame, stating, “When you go on a talk show, or even here now, and then you see soundbites of things you’ve said, pulled out and italicized, they sound really loud. I’m not that person… I make more sense in motion.” She goes on to express her perpetual feeling of being on the periphery and her continuous surprise at feeling like she belongs.
Despite her illustrious career and numerous accolades, Blanchett’s contemplation of retiring from acting brings a new chapter to her storied legacy, leaving fans and admirers eager to see what the future holds for the versatile performer.
