El Cajon, California – A massive vegetation fire near the U.S.-Mexico border has caused concern as it continues to burn through acres of land. The Border 2 Fire, as it has been named, has already scorched 4,250 acres and is only 10% contained with a moderate rate of spread.
Evacuation centers have been set up at the parking lot of Edwards Cinema in El Cajon and Southwestern College in Chula Vista. Residents in the area have been advised to stay alert and ready to evacuate if necessary.
Road closures have also been implemented, with Alta Road closed to traffic just south of Otay Mesa Road and Otay Lakes Road closed from Wueste to CA-94 Campo Road. In addition, some schools in the Chula Vista Elementary School District have been closed due to the proximity of the fire.
The fire began Thursday afternoon, initially burning 20 acres with a dangerous rate of spread. However, firefighters were able to downgrade the rate to moderate as they worked tirelessly to contain the flames. A smoke advisory is in effect for Otay Mesa and surrounding areas, warning residents about potentially hazardous air quality.
Flames were observed racing up the hillside on Otay Mountain, near the Otay Mountain Truck Trail, as the fire continued to grow overnight. By Friday morning, the fire had escalated to 4,250 acres, with only 10% containment. Firefighters are battling the blaze around the clock to prevent further damage and danger to the community.
