NEW YORK, NY – Broadway actor Gavin Creel passed away on Monday at the age of 48. Creel, a Tony Award-winning star known for his dynamic performances and activism in the Broadway community, lost his battle to metastatic melanotic peripheral nerve sheath sarcoma, an aggressive form of cancer.
His partner, Alex Temple Ward, confirmed his passing. Creel’s talent shined on the Broadway stage, earning him critical acclaim and a devoted fan base. He won a Tony Award for his role in Hello, Dolly! alongside Bette Midler and David Hyde Pierce.
Creel’s career was filled with memorable performances, from Thoroughly Modern Millie to Hair and the recent revival of Into the Woods. His passion for social justice was evident in his work on and off the stage, advocating for causes like LGBTQ+ rights.
Born in Ohio, Creel discovered his love for musical theater at a young age and pursued his passion at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theater, and Dance. Throughout his career, he maintained close ties to his alma mater, mentoring students and supporting initiatives for social change.
