Los Angeles, CA – The highly anticipated “Cruel Intentions” TV series has come to an abrupt end as Amazon Prime Video has decided to cancel the show after just one season, as reported by Variety. The series, which premiered on the streaming platform in November 2024, was a modern-day adaptation of the 1999 film of the same name, based on the classic novel “Dangerous Liaisons.”
Initially in development at IMDB TV, the series was eventually picked up by Prime Video in late 2023. Starring Sarah Catherine Hook, Zac Burgess, Savannah Lee Smith, and others, the show followed the elite students of Manchester College, a Washington, D.C.-adjacent university, where social status and reputation reign supreme.
Despite the star-studded cast and promising premise, “Cruel Intentions” failed to gain significant traction with viewers and critics alike. With a low critical approval rating of 24% on Rotten Tomatoes and a lack of presence on streaming charts, the show struggled to make a lasting impact in the competitive TV landscape.
This is not the first attempt to bring the world of “Cruel Intentions” to the small screen. In 2016, NBC ordered a pilot for a follow-up to the film, with original star Sarah Michelle Gellar set to reprise her role. However, the project never made it past the pilot stage. Prior to that, Fox had also tried to launch a prequel series, which met a similar fate and was ultimately turned into a direct-to-video film.
With the cancellation of the Amazon series, fans of “Cruel Intentions” may have to settle for revisiting the original film or its direct-to-video sequels. The journey from the big screen to TV has been a tumultuous one for this cult classic, leaving many wondering if the story will ever find a permanent home in the world of episodic television.
