NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Big Loud, the prominent record label associated with country music sensation Morgan Wallen, has sold a minority stake in Wallen’s catalog to Chord Music Partners for an estimated $200 million, according to sources familiar with the deal.
A representative for Big Loud confirmed the transaction but refrained from providing specific details about the financial aspects or the terms of the arrangement. The company characterized the sale as a strategic investment aimed at broadening its global reach and enhancing long-term artist development.
“This partnership aligns with our goals to expand our presence in the industry and foster the growth of our artists,” the spokesperson stated. The deal was facilitated with the collaboration of several entities, including Chord Music, Republic Records, Universal Music Group, and other legal and financial advisors.
Founded in 2021 by KKR and Dundee Partners, Chord Music’s portfolio boasts works from notable artists like The Weeknd and John Legend. Last year, Universal Music Group acquired a 25.8% stake in Chord, marking a significant shift in ownership when KKR exited the partnership.
Big Loud has emerged as a major player in Nashville’s music scene since its inception in 2013. The label’s roster features Wallen, whose popularity has soared with hits from albums that achieved multiple platinum certifications, alongside artists such as Hardy and Miranda Lambert. Wallen’s catalog includes chart-toppers like “Last Night” and “Whisky Glasses,” alongside tracks from his labelmates that showcase the talent within Big Loud.
Industry insiders suggest that Wallen’s catalog poses lucrative opportunities for returns over the next several years. Additionally, Big Loud operates a successful music publishing division, representing emerging talents like Ashley Cooke and co-founder Craig Wiseman, expanding its influence beyond recording.
Big Loud’s relationship with Republic Records further strengthens its market position. The label entered a multi-year distribution agreement with Republic’s Mercury Records last year, and its alliance with Chord—where UMG already holds equity—reinforces its integration into Universal’s extensive network. This collaboration allows Big Loud to explore new talent while maintaining operational continuity.
Wallen will embark on his highly anticipated “I’m the Problem” stadium tour starting June 20 in Houston, which promises to showcase his enduring appeal as one of country music’s leading acts. As Big Loud continues to evolve within the ever-changing music landscape, this latest deal reflects its commitment to innovation and artist development.
