Celestial Spectacle: Photographer Captures Rare Planetary Parade of Seven Planets and More in Stunning Panoramic Image from UK Sky

From Mendip Hills in Somerset, UK, astrophotographer Josh Dury captured a rare celestial event on February 28. The night sky showcased the alignment of seven planets: Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune in a magnificent display.

This unique phenomenon, known as a “great planetary parade,” is not expected to happen again until 2040. What sets Dury’s photograph apart is that it features not only the seven planets but also the moon, the sun, and Earth itself in the foreground.

Photographing this alignment posed a technical challenge as some planets appeared brighter than others. Including the sun in the composition without overshadowing the rest of the celestial bodies proved to be the most significant obstacle.

To create the panoramic image, Dury used an ultra-wide-angle lens to capture various sections of the landscape over a 2.5-hour window. He then skillfully blended them together using HDR blending to present a breathtaking view of the celestial lineup.

With careful planning and ideal sky conditions, Dury seized the perfect timing to capture the rare alignment. The clear night sky provided him with excellent visibility to not only photograph the planetary setup but also capture additional celestial phenomena like zodiacal light and two remarkable galaxies: the Andromeda Galaxy (M31) and the Triangulum Galaxy (M33).

The alignment of the seven planets, the moon, and the sun offered a once-in-a-lifetime photographic opportunity for Dury and other enthusiasts. With Saturn fading from view shortly after March 2, this event became a brief yet unforgettable experience for those who witnessed it.

Dury’s image serves as a stunning reminder of the intricate celestial dances occurring above us, showcasing the beauty and grandeur of the cosmos. It is a testament to the wonders of the universe that captivate and inspire space enthusiasts around the world.
