Chicago Officers Shoot Man Who Walked Into Police Station With Gun

An officer shot an armed man who entered a police station on the city’s West Side on Wednesday “ranting” anti-law enforcement statements, days after another officer shot a man who infiltrated another police station and pointed guns at officers.

In a press conference, Superintendent David Brown said the man walked into the lobby of the Ogden District police station with what appeared to be a gun barrel in a plastic bag.

Brown described the man as a “ranting anti-police individual,” and that when he was instructed to drop his weapon, the man pointed it at officers rather than drop it, causing three of them to fire their weapons. According to Brown, the man was shot at least once in the shoulder. His injuries are not considered life-threatening, according to the department.

According to the department’s spokesman, Tom Ahern, the man was taken to a hospital in stable condition and his gun was recovered from the scene. Brown said that detectives had not yet determined the identity of the man, saying that he was not cooperating with them.

Just over a week ago, Donald Patrick of Waukegan, 47, was shot by police after climbing a fire escape from another West Side station. He entered the building, and grabbing handguns off a table and pointed them at SWAT training officers.

A warrant was issued for Patrick’s arrest and charges were filed against him for burglary and aggravated assault of an officer with a firearm. As of right now, he is still in jail.

Deputy Chief Brown said the department is exploring how it can beef up security at police stations around the city in order to combat crime in the area. Nevertheless, he added that the department must also maintain open police facilities so that citizens can make reports and speak to officers.
