PARIS, France – At the upcoming Paris Olympics, tennis star Coco Gauff will be making history as the youngest American ever to carry the flag for the United States Olympic team at the Opening Ceremonies. The 20-year-old athlete is set to join NBA icon LeBron James in leading their U.S. teammates in a unique parade down the Seine river, a first-of-its-kind ceremony for the world-renowned event.
Gauff, who holds the No. 2 spot in the world rankings, missed out on the opportunity to compete in the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 after testing positive for covid. Despite the setback, she is looking forward to representing her country on the biggest stage alongside James, showcasing their dedication and passion to fans from around the globe.
The honor of being selected as flag bearer was bestowed upon Gauff and James by a vote of U.S. Olympians overseen by the Team USA Athletes Commission. Fellow tennis player Chris Eubanks put forth Gauff’s nomination, highlighting not only her exceptional talent on the court but also her character off the court.
With an impressive record of winning seven individual titles and numerous doubles titles, including the French Open, Gauff’s journey to the top of tennis began with a breakthrough at Wimbledon in 2019. CEO of the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee, Sarah Hirshland, commended Gauff for her approach to the sport and expressed excitement for her Olympic debut in Paris.
Gauff’s upcoming role as flag bearer not only signifies her athletic prowess but also her ability to inspire fans both in the United States and worldwide. Her partnership with LeBron James in leading Team USA at the Opening Ceremonies reflects the coming together of top athletes to showcase their talent and dedication on the global stage in Paris.
