Los Angeles, California – The Los Angeles Rams have decided to part ways with wide receiver Cooper Kupp, a move that may surprise some fans. Reports indicate that the team has informed Kupp that he will be released on Wednesday, ahead of the start of the new league year. This decision comes after the Rams reportedly ceased efforts to trade Kupp to another team.
Kupp, a third-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, has been a key player for the Rams, amassing impressive statistics during his time in Los Angeles. With 634 receptions, 7,776 yards, and 57 touchdowns, Kupp has made a significant impact on the team’s offense. His stellar performance in the 2021 season earned him the title of offensive player of the year, and he further solidified his legacy by winning the Super Bowl LVI MVP when the Rams triumphed over the Bengals.
The timing of Kupp’s release allows the Rams to make strategic decisions regarding the team’s salary cap. By designating Kupp as a post-June 1 cut, the team can clear $15 million in cap space later in the year. However, declining to use this designation would result in $22.26 million in dead money, while also freeing up $7.52 million in cap space.
Following his release, Kupp will have the opportunity to sign with any team as a free agent. In the meantime, the Rams have already made moves to revamp their receiving corps by agreeing to terms with Davante Adams and Puka Nacua. These changes mark a new chapter for the Rams as they prepare for the upcoming season without Kupp in their lineup.
