(AbsoluteNews.com) – In May 2020, federal agents arrested Song Guo Zheng in Alaska as he was reportedly trying to board a plane to China. He was charged in a scheme to steal US research and send it to the Communist nation. A year after his arrest, he’s finally been sentenced for his crimes.
On Friday, May 14, Zheng, who pleaded guilty to the scheme to steal research, was sentenced to 37 months in federal prison. According to prosecutors, his research groups received more than $4.3 million in NIH grants. They also received funding from the National Natural Science Foundation of China. He admitted to lying on applications to obtain the grants and then reportedly helped the Chinese develop its immunology and rheumatology programs.

In addition to the 37 months in prison, Zheng has to pay nearly $414,000 to Ohio State University. He also has to pay the NIH $3.4 million in restitution.
