(AbsoluteNews.com) – President Donald Trump’s “Operation Warp Speed” has been a rousing success. Multiple pharmaceutical companies have created COVID-19 vaccines, therapies, and test kits in less than a year. Where do the medical breakthroughs currently stand?
Vaccines
There are currently three very effective COVID-19 vaccinations that have shown promising results in clinical trials and could soon hit the market. Pfizer, Moderna, and AstraZeneca have all said their vaccinations are highly effective.
The Moderna and Pfizer vaccines reportedly have 95% efficacy. AstraZeneca announced theirs is up to 90% effective, but it depends on the patient’s dosage. Pfizer is the only one of the three companies that has applied for emergency use authorization with the FDA.
Therapies
On Saturday, November 21, the FDA announced it had approved emergency use authorization for Regeneron Pharmaceuticals Inc’s coronavirus therapy REGN-COV2. According to an October letter to investors, the company explained current data shows the antibody treatment lowers a patient’s viral load and reduces the number of medical appointments they may need.
President Donald Trump received the REGN-COV2 treatment while he was hospitalized at Walter Reed Medical Center in October. He’s said the treatment helped him recover quickly and vowed to make it available to all Americans.
Test Kits
Coronavirus testing has also come a long way since the beginning of the pandemic. There are tests widely available now, and the FDA just approved the first one for home use.
Lucira Health’s “All-In-One” test kit costs less than $50, but patients will need a prescription. Once they get the test, all they have to do is swab their nose, put the swab in a solution, and swirl it. They will know the results in 30 minutes or less.
The progress made over the last several months is truly remarkable. Hopefully, this will all be a bad memory a year from now.
