CLEARWATER, Fla. — A tragic boating accident occurred Sunday evening when a recreational vessel collided with a ferry carrying 45 passengers, resulting in one fatality and at least 10 injuries. The incident unfolded in calm waters near the Clearwater Memorial Causeway Bridge, as the community celebrated the final day of the Sugar Sand Festival, a popular sand-sculpting event.
Witnesses aboard the ferry recounted a sudden and jarring moment of chaos. Marco Vacheco, traveling with his family, described hearing crew members shouting warnings just before the impact, as the yacht struck the vessel from behind during twilight hours.
Local authorities responded quickly to the scene, which was inundated with emergency calls that reportedly captured distressing screams from passengers. Clearwater Police Chief Eric Gandy stated that first responders encountered a dire situation upon arrival, with some individuals struggling in the water after the crash.
The injuries sustained by ferry passengers included broken bones and head trauma, according to Tony Tedesco, the EMS chief for Clearwater Fire Rescue. As rescue teams deployed, efforts focused on securing the safety of those injured while assessing the scene’s critical condition. Notably, all passengers on both the ferry and the recreational boat were accounted for.
Authorities identified the operator of the recreational vessel, who is cooperating with the investigation. Initial assessments showed no signs of alcohol impairment. However, Fish and Wildlife Commission officials are examining the circumstances surrounding the collision and whether any charges will be pursued.
Amidst the confusion, local hospitals were alerted to prepare for the influx of injured parties. Medical helicopters were dispatched to transport the most severely hurt individuals, reflecting the urgency of the situation.
As investigation efforts continue, the Coast Guard stated that the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission will lead the inquiry into the accident’s cause. The community is now left grappling with the aftermath of a celebration that turned to tragedy, leaving many questioning how such a calamity could occur in seemingly peaceful waters.
