Chicago, Illinois – The Cubs have made a significant move by signing infielder Nicky Lopez to a big league deal, the team announced Wednesday. This move comes as part of a series of roster changes by the organization. To make room for Lopez on the roster, the Cubs have designated infielder Gage Workman for assignment. Lopez, who was seen entering Wrigley Field by photographer Sam Bernero, has now officially signed a major league contract according to 670 The Score’s Shane Riordan.
Along with the addition of Lopez, the Cubs have also made other adjustments to their roster. Lefty Drew Pomeranz, who was recently acquired by the team, has had his contract selected. In a corresponding move, righty Gavin Hollowell has been optioned to Triple-A Iowa. Additionally, left-handed pitcher Justin Steele has been transferred from the 15-day IL to the 60-day IL due to undergoing elbow surgery, creating space for Pomeranz on the 40-man roster.
Lopez had initially been with the Cubs as a non-roster invitee during spring training but did not make the Opening Day roster. Subsequently, he joined the Los Angeles Angels to provide infield depth due to various injuries on their team. After spending a short time with the Angels and appearing in five games without a hit, Lopez was designated for assignment and elected free agency before signing with the Cubs.
Known for his versatile and high-quality defensive skills, Lopez is expected to bring depth to the Cubs’ infield. Despite his defensive capabilities, Lopez’s offensive production has been lackluster throughout his career, with a career batting line of .247/.311/.313 in the MLB. However, in a standout 2021 campaign, Lopez batted .300/.365/.378, which has been an anomaly compared to his recent seasons.
On the other hand, Workman, who was selected from the Tigers organization in the Rule 5 Draft, began the season with a strong showing but struggled once the regular season began. Despite his offensive potential, Workman’s high strikeout rate and inconsistent hitting led to the Cubs designating him for assignment, opening the door for Lopez’s arrival.
The addition of Pomeranz also marks a significant move for the Cubs, as the veteran lefty has not pitched in the majors since 2021 due to injuries. His command was an issue during his recent stint with the Mariners’ Triple-A affiliate, but he showed promise with a high strikeout rate. Pomeranz’s experience and potential upside make him a valuable addition to the Cubs’ pitching staff as they look to solidify their roster for the remainder of the season.
