Warsaw, Poland — CD Projekt Red has unveiled new gameplay footage of the highly anticipated Switch 2 version of its popular game, Cyberpunk 2077. In a recent installment of Nintendo’s Creator’s Voice series on YouTube, the studio showcased the enhanced visuals of the Ultimate Edition set to launch with the new console.
During the presentation, the Polish studio highlighted the innovative use of Switch 2’s Joy-Con controllers, allowing players to wield katana swords in the game. Charles Tremblay, vice president of technology at CD Projekt Red, emphasized that despite the differences in hardware, the Switch 2 version retains the core experience fans have come to love. “Players returning to this title will feel right at home,” Tremblay remarked, noting that the handheld’s advancements promise a superior gameplay experience.
The Switch 2’s new LCD screens, equipped with Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) support, are expected to elevate the game’s immersive qualities, making it an ideal way to enjoy Cyberpunk 2077 on the go. Previously, the PC version had been accessible on other handhelds such as the Steam Deck and Asus ROG Ally, but this marks the first dedicated handheld version developed specifically for the Switch 2.
Tim Green, a studio engineer, further elaborated on the enhancements brought by the new hardware. He indicated that the capabilities of the Switch 2 provide a more powerful experience than what was achievable on previous generation consoles like the PS4 and Xbox One. Cyberpunk 2077 faced significant performance challenges during its initial release, particularly among last-gen consoles, leading to a later expansion that was exclusive to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
Green acknowledged that the development process for the Ultimate Edition was not without its obstacles. However, he noted that they carefully navigated trade-offs to preserve the vision of the game. “We haven’t had to struggle with memory constraints,” he explained, attributing the improved performance to the speed of the console’s data storage, which has mitigated earlier streaming issues and allowed the team to focus on further enhancements.
The studio is eager to share the results of their hard work with fans, who have witnessed the ongoing updates to the game since its original release. As anticipation builds for the Switch 2 version, CD Projekt Red aims to deliver a high-caliber experience that resonates with both new players and long-time fans alike.
