Los Angeles, California — A sequel to the popular animated series Cyberpunk: Edgerunners has been confirmed at Anime Expo 2025, together with the unveiling of its first promotional poster. Notable voice actors Emi Lo, who lends her voice to the character Lucy, and Zach Aguilar, voice of David Martinez, attended the event alongside writer and producer Bartosz Sztybor. The panel, which stirred excitement among fans, was hosted by online personality Joey, better known as TheAnimeMan. A surprise appearance by director Hiroyuki Imaishi added to the electric atmosphere.
During the panel, Sztybor shared a humorous take on the series’ melancholic themes, stating, “People in Poland are sad. They are born sad, they die sad, so I just wanted to make the whole world sad.” He also added a playful note that fans should temper their expectations, given the fate of the beloved character David from the first season. "David’s dead," he reminded them.
The announcement follows a collaboration project between Netflix Animation, CD Projekt Red (CDPR), and Cyberpunk that was initially revealed in September 2024. While it remains unclear if this sequel aligns with that earlier announcement, Sztybor explained the rationale behind continuing the series: "Night City has a lot of stories to tell." His ambition goes beyond mere narrative expansion, aiming to evoke even deeper emotions from the audience. “I want you to be even more sad now,” he said.
The upcoming installment will consist of 10 episodes set in the same immersive world of Cyberpunk 2077, promising a gripping storyline centered on themes of "redemption and revenge." The new arc will be directed by Kai Ikarashi, known for Episode 6 of the original series, titled "Girl on Fire." His involvement signals a desire for continuity while also exploring new creative avenues within the franchise.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, which debuted in September 2022, received accolades for its unique storytelling and striking animation. The series features a young protagonist navigating life in Night City, a dystopian environment dominated by technology and body modification. The show garnered praise, winning awards for Best New Anime and Best Original Anime, and quickly became a fan favorite on Netflix.
Michał Nowakowski, Joint-CEO of CDPR, reaffirmed that Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 will be making its way to Netflix in the near future. With the first season’s blend of drama and action resonating strongly with viewers, the anticipation for what’s to come continues to build within the gaming and anime communities.
As the franchise expands, fans are left wondering what new challenges and narratives will unfold in Night City. With its rich tapestry of characters and a world teeming with potential stories, the upcoming sequel promises to dive deeper into the human condition against the backdrop of a technologically advanced, yet morally ambiguous society.
