The explosion occurred during the disassembly of wheel components for maintenance at a wheel and brake shop. Fortunately, the parts were not attached to an aircraft at the time of the incident.
Following the explosion, the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration launched an investigation into the matter. Delta Air Lines stated that they are fully cooperating with the authorities, and the cause of the explosion has yet to be determined.
Emergency response teams were quick to arrive at the scene near Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport shortly after 5 a.m., ensuring that flights were not affected and that Delta’s maintenance operations remained unaffected. Delta expressed deep sorrow at the tragic loss of two of their team members and the injury of another, offering full support to the affected employees’ families and colleagues during this challenging time.
The injured worker is currently receiving medical treatment, as Delta continues to work closely with local authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident. The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed being in contact with Delta, with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration also commencing an investigation into the workplace accident. The facility where the explosion occurred is part of Delta TechOps, a division that provides maintenance, repair, and overhaul services for Delta Air Lines and numerous other aviation and airline clients worldwide.
John Laughter, the Executive Vice President of Delta and president of TechOps, assured employees that counselors would be made available to offer support during this difficult time. The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, working to organize ground workers at Delta, urged prompt action from the airline and authorities to thoroughly investigate the incident and understand its cause.
