(AbsoluteNews.com) – The First Amendment of the US Constitution states that Congress cannot pass laws that violate freedom of speech, the press, or religion. But what happens if members of the House of Representatives start pressuring private companies to do one of those things? That’s exactly what happened recently.
On February 22, California Democratic Reps. Jerry McNerney and Anna Eshoo sent letters to the CEOs of media companies demanding to know the role they played in allegedly “disseminating misinformation to millions” of people. They claimed experts accused the “right-wing media ecosystem” of essentially spreading fake news and wanted to know whether the media companies will renew their contracts with Fox News, OANN, and Newsmax. The lawmakers also demanded to know if the networks were ‘punished’ for using their “platforms to disseminate disinformation” after the election.

Journalist Dew Holden, who has written for the New York Times and Washington Post, called the letters an “egregious assault on the free press.” The lawmakers are clearly trying to intimidate the media companies and force them to stop airing conservative media. If that isn’t a violation of the First Amendment, what is?
