(AbsoluteNews.com) – Americans are once again being reminded of how dangerous it is to serve as a law enforcement officer in this country. A Texas department and family are mourning after an ambush-style attack left one deputy dead.
At about 2 a.m. on Saturday morning, three Harris County Precinct 4 constable deputies were working a side job at a Houston sports bar when they left and went outside to address a situation. The deputies thought a robbery might have been taking place. Two of the deputies walked into the parking lot to confront a suspect, when someone else opened fire on them with an AR-15.
Both deputies, 30-year-old Kareem Atkins and 28-year-old Darrell Garrett, were shot. Atkins, who recently returned from paternity leave, died of his injuries. Garrett suffered a gunshot wound to the back and underwent surgery at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center in Houston.
As Chief Jones said earlier, our hearts go out to the families of the deputies and the men & women of Harris County Pct. 4.
Currently, there are no updates in the investigation. Any developments in the case will be posted here.#hounews https://t.co/B9s2CCCneX

The third deputy, Juqaim Barthen, 26, heard the shots and ran toward his colleagues when he was shot in the foot. The search for the shooter is ongoing. Police described him as a heavy-set Hispanic man with a beard. He appeared to be in his early 20s and was wearing a white t-shirt and blue jeans.
Atkins leaves behind two children and a wife. His funeral will take place on October 25.
