Dinosaurs Roar Back: “Jurassic World Rebirth” Surges with $147 Million Opening, Shaking Up the Box Office!

Universal’s “Jurassic World Rebirth” has dominated the box office, amassing $147 million domestically during the five-day Fourth of July holiday weekend. This latest entry in the franchise not only exceeded expectations but also positioned itself as a significant contender with audiences, following in the footsteps of its predecessor, “Jurassic World Dominion,” which earned $145 million in its opening weekend last year.

Early projections had forecasted earnings of around $80 million for the typical three-day span and $135 million for the five-day period. Instead, “Jurassic World Rebirth” surged ahead, reinforcing Hollywood’s recovery after a sluggish start to 2025. Year-to-date box office figures are up more than 14% compared to last year, while summer season tallies have soared 15% over the same timeframe, according to Comscore data.

This film marks the seventh installment of the “Jurassic Park” franchise, which originated with Steven Spielberg’s iconic 1993 film that grossed nearly $924 million globally, or over $2 billion when adjusted for inflation. Analysts view the continued appeal of the franchise as a testament to its ability to engage audiences across generations. Paul Dergarabedian, a senior media analyst at Comscore, noted the revitalization brought to the brand through the film’s title and the introduction of star Scarlett Johansson.

“Jurassic World Rebirth” knocked Apple and Warner Bros. Pictures’ “F1” to second place, which generated $26 million domestically and saw a 54% decline from the previous weekend. The racing drama, featuring Brad Pitt, debuted with about $55.6 million in its opening weekend and hit $144 million worldwide.

Despite its domestic challenges, “F1” has thrived internationally, reflecting its broader global appeal, aimed more at international audiences than at US markets. Dergarabedian commented on the film’s international success, highlighting its potential given the sport’s global fanbase.

Looking ahead, “Jurassic World Rebirth” and “F1” will face stiff competition next week with the arrival of Warner Bros.’ highly anticipated “Superman,” which analysts predict could surpass $100 million on its opening weekend. As Dergarabedian pointedly remarked, the success of “Jurassic World” and “F1” sets a favorable stage for the superhero film’s release.

Shawn Robbins, an analyst at Fandango and founder of Box Office Theory, shared insights regarding the busy summer box office landscape. He noted that upcoming releases, including “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” later in July, could collectively generate about 25% of the domestic box office this summer.

Robbins added that the audience for “F1,” “Jurassic World Rebirth,” and “Superman” may overlap significantly, primarily appealing to younger male viewers while “Superman” might also draw families and a broader demographic. He emphasized that summer’s blockbuster season creates a unique opportunity for multiple films to coexist and succeed in theaters.
