VATICAN CITY — Renowned director Martin Scorsese has collaborated with the late Pope Francis on a documentary that aims to share transformative stories through film. Titled “Aldeas – A New Story,” the documentary features the pontiff’s candid reflections and is said to capture what may be his final extensive interview on camera.
The film revolves around Scholas Occurrentes, an international nonprofit organization established by Pope Francis in 2013. This initiative seeks to create a “Culture of Encounter” among young people worldwide. One of its key projects, Aldeas, engages youth in film-making, showcasing their experiences in Indonesia, Gambia, and Italy as they craft their own short films.
In a statement released by Aldeas Scholas Films and Scorsese’s Sikelia Productions, the documentary is described as a testament to the belief that creativity is both a powerful means of expression and a genuine pathway to hope and transformation. Before his passing, Pope Francis praised Aldeas, calling it a “poetic and constructive project” that addresses the essence of human existence and social connections.
Scorsese, who had multiple conversations with the pope over the years, emphasized the importance of dialogue across cultures, particularly in today’s world. He remarked, “One of the best ways to connect with one another is by sharing our stories, reflecting on our personal lives and experiences. It helps us understand the diverse perspectives that shape how we see the world.”
The late pontiff held a deep desire for people everywhere to engage in respectful exchanges while honoring their cultural identities. Scorsese noted that cinema serves as a unique medium for fostering these important dialogues.
Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21, was remembered fondly by Scorsese. Describing him as “a remarkable human being,” the director highlighted the pontiff’s humility, wisdom, and commitment to promoting goodness. “He understood that ignorance remains one of humanity’s greatest challenges, driving him to continually seek knowledge and share enlightenment,” Scorsese said.
Reflecting on Francis’s legacy, Scorsese expressed a profound sense of loss, both personally and for the world. “I feel fortunate to have known him, and I will greatly miss his warmth and presence,” he stated. “Yet, he has left behind a guiding light that can never be extinguished.”
As the Vatican prepares for a conclave to elect a new pope scheduled for May 7, the impact of Pope Francis’s life and vision serves as a poignant reminder of the power of forgiveness, understanding, and human connection. A release date for the documentary has yet to be announced, but its anticipated messages promise to resonate widely with audiences across the globe.
