FRISCO, Texas — The Dallas Cowboys’ 2025 NFL Draft marked a new era under offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, who took on his inaugural role in leading the team’s draft strategy. Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones expressed confidence in Schottenheimer’s leadership, noting the seamless collaboration with personnel executive Will McClay and the scouting team.
The Cowboys executed a robust draft class, making nine selections after trading away one of their picks. Their first choice was Alabama guard Tyler Booker, selected 12th overall, aimed at strengthening the offensive line. The complete list of draft picks features a range of positions reflective of the team’s needs and strategic focus.
Dallas selected:
- Round 1 (Pick 12): Tyler Booker, G, Alabama
- Round 2 (44): Donovan Ezeiruaku, EDGE, Boston College
- Round 3 (76): Shavon Revel Jr., CB, East Carolina
- Round 5 (149): Jaydon Blue, RB, Texas
- Round 5 (152): Shemar James, LB, Florida
- Round 6 (204): Ajani Cornelius, OL, Oregon
- Round 7 (217): Jay Toia, DT, UCLA
- Round 7 (239): Phil Mafah, RB, Clemson
- Round 7 (247): Tommy Akingbesote, DT, Maryland
Schottenheimer’s introduction to the draft process brought unique challenges; he and his staff took a bit longer to finalize their prospect board due to their adjustment to these new roles. Nonetheless, COO Stephen Jones acknowledged the team’s steadfast commitment to their draft strategies, emphasizing the importance of selecting the best talent available, even amidst pressing needs.
“Our adherence to the prospect board was perhaps the best we’ve ever been,” Stephen Jones stated. “We chose to prioritize talent over immediate needs, and the results speak for themselves.”
The Cowboys strategically bolstered their roster by selecting two running backs, Jaydon Blue and Phil Mafah, late in the draft. Blue is noted for his explosive playmaking ability, while Mafah offers a more physical running style. McClay expressed optimism about the duo’s potential to enhance the team’s running game.
"Explosive playmakers are essential in the NFL," McClay said. "Jaydon brings that explosiveness, and pairing him with a physical talent like Phil creates opportunities for our offense."
While the team had evaluated a deep class of running backs, Dallas opted to wait for the right moment to secure their selections. Jerry Jones conveyed that they would have considered earlier opportunities had the depth of the position not been so satisfying. Both rookies will compete for positions alongside veteran additions Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders.
On the defensive front, the Cowboys’ depth at defensive tackle prompted them to make two selections in the seventh round. Both Toia and Akingbesote were drafted to enhance competition and physicality within the unit. McClay described their focus on acquiring players capable of executing aggressive, fast-paced football.
“Adding size and physicality was essential,” McClay said. “We want to be disruptive, and the way we approach defense requires strength at the line.”
The Cowboys also added linebacker Shemar James to provide valuable versatility. Schottenheimer praised James’ instincts and ability to adapt within coordinator Matt Eberflus’ system, marking his selection as another crucial move for the team’s defensive alignment.
Another highlight of the draft was the Cowboys’ decision to prioritize the offensive line again by selecting Ajani Cornelius, who is expected to be a versatile lineman capable of filling multiple roles. McClay emphasized the need for such adaptability among offensive linemen in today’s game.
For the first time since 2020, the Cowboys did not draft a wide receiver despite ongoing discussions about securing an explosive option to complement CeeDee Lamb. The front office remains open to adding a receiver through trade or free agency as part of their ongoing evaluation of the roster.
“It’s certainly a topic we’re considering,” said Jerry Jones, reflecting on the team’s potential moves to enhance their receiving corps. “The door remains open for improvements as we approach the next phase of our offseason activities.”
As the Cowboys gear up for the offseason activities starting May 19, all eyes will be on their draft picks and how they will fit into the team’s evolving strategy for the upcoming season.
