HANGZHOU, China — Onyx International is stepping into the burgeoning market of color E Ink displays with the launch of its new Boox Mira Pro, a 25.3-inch monitor that promises to connect seamlessly with both PC and Mac systems. Priced at $1,900, this innovative device seeks to overcome some of the shortcomings traditionally associated with color E Ink technology.
The Boox Mira Pro features a resolution of 3200×1800 and a 16:9 aspect ratio, enhancing the visual experience while retaining the gentle-on-the-eyes qualities E Ink is known for. This model builds on the company’s previous offerings in black-and-white displays, leveraging E Ink Kaleido 3 technology which enables the monitor to showcase up to 4,096 colors. However, potential users should consider that the quality of images and the refresh rates can fluctuate depending on which of the four customizable presets is selected.
Despite the advancements, challenges persist. While the monitor aims to deliver vibrant colors, users may still experience issues such as lower refresh rates compared to conventional monitors, which can lead to ghosting effects. This is a known limitation of E Ink technology, and while improvements have been made, it remains a compromise that enthusiasts will have to weigh.
On the connectivity front, the Boox Mira Pro is versatile, including one full-size HDMI port, a mini HDMI port, a USB-C port, and a DisplayPort. Its stand takes inspiration from Apple’s Studio Display but also offers VESA mounting for added flexibility.
Onyx International has spent over a decade developing its range of Boox devices, typically focusing on Android-powered E Ink tablets. These tablets stand out for their integration of E Ink’s eye-friendly display alongside access to numerous content sources through Google Play, making them a more open alternative to ecosystems controlled by brands like Amazon.
As device manufacturers continue to experiment with the potential of color E Ink technology, the Boox Mira Pro aims to be at the forefront of this evolution. While the technology is not yet perfect, the willingness of companies like Onyx International to innovate suggests that improvements may come, paving the way for more user-friendly and capable displays in the near future.
