Mexico earthquake – live: Another 5.8 quake jolts Michoacán as death toll rises – The Independent
A 15km deep earthquake hit near La Placita de Morelos in the state of Michoacán, and a mandatory evacuation order was issued in Mexico City. Mexico City residents were confused when the seismic alert sounded almost two minutes before the quake struck.
The powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake hit the southwestern coast of Mexico on Monday, killing at least one person and causing moderate damage in nearby Colima. There are no known casualties or damage yet recorded in Mexico City, according to the city’s mayor.
One person was killed in Manzanillo, Colima, when a wall at a mall collapsed. There have been reports that in Colima there was moderate to heavy damage. The report says that 27,000 people were exposed to at least a VII shaking on the PHIVOLCS Earthquake Intensity Scale. This would cause a lot of damage, especially to poor constructed buildings.
Seismologist Dr. Lucy Jones gives information on how to prepare for an earthquake, and says that the first few hours are the most important for rescuing people from trapped buildings.
A 7.6 magnitude earthquake would probably be 100 kilometers long, and would dip shallowly under the coastline and the Earth. It would probably cause a tsunami watch, because it would probably have changed the shape of the sea floor.
A tsunami warning was initially issued immediately after the quake, but has since been revised. Latest readings show a decrease in wave heights.
