Los Angeles, California – Fans of the Broadway hit-turned-film adaptation, Wicked, have found themselves in a not-so-enchanted situation when attempting to attend screenings at AMC theaters in full Elphaba-inspired green face paint. Despite their dedication to the beloved musical, some individuals have been turned away at the door and asked to remove their face paint before entering the theater.
Social media has been buzzing with videos of disappointed fans having to wash off their green faces before being allowed into the screenings. One TikToker, Celine Serrano, expressed frustration at this policy, calling it “the dumbest rule” and questioning why some guests were allowed in with face paint while others were not.
AMC, along with other major movie chains like Regal, Cinemark, Cineplex, Landmark Theatres, and Marcus Theatres, enforce a strict policy against face paint, masks, and anything covering the face for safety reasons. However, there have been reports of theaters embracing guests who arrive in full costume, posing for pictures and allowing them to enjoy the experience.
In addition to the face paint debacle, AMC issued a warning to movie-goers, advising them not to sing along during the film. This policy, aimed at preventing disruptive behavior, has been in place for some time but was reiterated due to the release of Wicked in theaters, featuring iconic songs like “Defying Gravity” and “Popular.”
Wicked, starring Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda the Good Witch, has captured the hearts of fans, both old and new. Despite some hiccups at the cinema, the magic of the musical continues to enchant audiences, reminding them that while face paint and singing may be prohibited, the experience of Wicked is truly unforgettable.
