BALI, Indonesia — At least five individuals have lost their lives, and dozens remain unaccounted for following a ferry disaster near Bali, a popular tourist destination in Indonesia. The ferry was carrying 53 passengers and 12 crew members when it capsized around 11:20 p.m. local time Wednesday while traveling from Banyuwangi, located on Java’s eastern coast.
Authorities from Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency reported that 31 survivors have been located, but the search and rescue operations are still ongoing. While investigations into the cause of the incident are underway, initial reports suggest that mechanical issues were flagged just before the vessel went down. An official also noted that poor weather conditions may have contributed to the tragedy.
Survivors include both locals from Banyuwangi and residents from more inland regions of Java, according to the lists compiled by authorities. One survivor, Imron, described the moments leading up to the capsizing, stating the ferry tilted sharply multiple times before the cabin began to fill with water. He managed to escape by swimming through a gap in the ferry and later found a life jacket before being rescued by a local fisherman.
Another survivor, Bejo Santoso, recounted how he jumped off the ferry just in time. He noted that within minutes of the vessel starting to roll, it had fully capsized, and his quick thinking allowed him to reach safety.
Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, currently on an official trip to Saudi Arabia, has ordered an immediate emergency response to assist with recovery efforts. The route taken by the ferry is a busy passage often used by travelers between Java and Bali, highlighting the significance of this maritime route in daily life.
Images released show ambulances on standby and anxious residents awaiting information about their loved ones at the scene. Marine accidents are a common occurrence in Indonesia, an archipelago that consists of approximately 17,000 islands. The country has faced ongoing criticism regarding the inconsistent enforcement of safety regulations in maritime travel.
Just earlier this year, another incident highlighted the perils of sea travel in the region when an Australian woman tragically lost her life after a similar accident off Bali, underscoring persistent safety concerns faced by fishermen and ferry operators alike. As the search continues, many are calling for stricter oversight and enhanced safety measures to prevent future tragedies.
