While other children “hid under their blankets,” a Florida man shot four people, including a four-year-old girl.
During an argument at their Myers Drive home in East Orange County around 4 a.m. Friday morning, Shavell Jordan Jones, 23, opened fire on his girlfriend and her family, including her mother and young niece, per the police report filed with the local sheriff’s office.
After the fifth wounded victim, who survived, escaped and ran to a neighbor’s home who called 911, police responded to the gruesome scene.
When deputies arrived at the home, Sheriff John Mina told reporters that three women and a 4-year-old girl had been shot to the head. After turning the gun on himself, Jones survived a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head and was taken to a hospital.
He began removing his belongings from the house after arguing with his girlfriend, Mina said.
He returned shortly thereafter and allegedly began firing shots. According to authorities, Jones shot and killed his girlfriend, her 28-year-old sister, her 49-year-old mother, and her 4-year-old niece. A 20-year-old sister of his girlfriend was also wounded, but managed to run to a neighbor’s house.
When the shooting started, two other children, a 6-year-old and a 4-year-old whose twin had been killed, hid under blankets, Mina said.
There is no known domestic violence history at the home, according to police. Jones only criminal complaint has been for failure to appear for a misdemeanor charge.
According to Mina, it’s too early to tell if Jones will survive the self-inflicted wound, but if he does, he will be charged with murder.
