FLU DEATHS IN KENTUCKY: Tragic increase in child fatalities sparks vaccine urgency

FRANKFORT, Ky. – Kentucky health officials have reported that three children in the state have tragically succumbed to the flu this year, with one of the children hailing from Louisville. On Monday, the officials disclosed that two more children had lost their lives to the flu, one from the Barren River District and the other from Jefferson County.

The identity of the first child who passed away remains undisclosed, with their death being announced on February 7th. Officials noted that this child had not received a flu vaccine for the season, although it is uncertain whether the two latest children had been vaccinated.

Dr. Steven Stack, the Commissioner of the Department for Public Health, stressed the importance of safeguarding the health and safety of individuals in Kentucky. Urging the public to remain vigilant in following precautionary measures such as receiving vaccinations, maintaining good hygiene practices, covering coughs and sneezes, and staying home when sick, Dr. Stack highlighted the significance of protecting oneself and loved ones from the detrimental effects of viruses like influenza and COVID-19.

Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reveals that this flu season has been the most severe in over 15 years. The CDC recommends that individuals aged six months and older receive the annual flu and COVID-19 vaccines. Kentucky health officials also advise the use of antiviral treatments to address the illnesses. To access flu or COVID-19 vaccines, individuals can visit vaccines.gov.
