Former Special Forces Captain Guilty of Espionage

( – Every American service member takes an oath to defend the US from enemies foreign and domestic. When that person becomes the very thing they’re supposed to defend the country against, it’s an unbelievable betrayal of trust. Unfortunately, that’s what one former Green Beret is guilty of doing.

On Wednesday, November 18, Peter Rafael Dzibinski Debbins pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit espionage. The former Green Beret admitted to giving information to Russia about his unit’s activities. He called himself a “son of Russia,” and said he thought America needs “be cut down to size.”

Debbins served in the military from 1998 through 2005. When he left the Army, he became a military contractor working in counterintelligence.

US Attorney G. Zachary Terwilliger said the veteran was trained to protect America, but instead he “betrayed that trust.” Debbins is facing up to life in prison. He faces sentencing in February 2021.
