Venturing along the picturesque beach on England’s west coast, one may envision stumbling upon relics from the age of dinosaurs. In a stroke of serendipity, this fantasy turned into reality as a bone dating back around 202 million years was discovered below the crumbled cliffs of Somerset. This fossil, a colossal lower jaw measuring over 6 ½ feet long, challenged existing knowledge regarding prehistoric marine reptiles, hinting at a creature of gigantic proportions that once roamed the warm, shallow seas that covered what is now Britain during the final stages of the Triassic Period.
The remarkable find unfolded in May 2020 when 11-year-old Ruby Reynolds and her father, Justin, were combing the mudflats of Blue Anchor in search of fossils. Justin stumbled upon a significant fragment of bone, sparking a chain of events that led to the unearthing of another larger piece by Ruby herself. Recognizing the significance of the discovery, paleontologist Dean Lomax, from the University of Bristol and the University of Manchester, quickly got involved. The bone fragments discovered by Ruby were eventually identified as belonging to Ichthyotitan severnensis, meaning “giant fish lizard from the Severn,” a true behemoth of the ancient oceans.
Further excavation of the site revealed more sections of the jawbone, piecing together an almost complete jawbone that astonished researchers. The team’s analysis indicated that Ichthyotitan severnensis was a colossal creature, stretching approximately 82 feet in length, akin to the size of a blue whale.
