Four shot in violent altercation near MLB stadium

WASHINGTON, D.C. – A violent shooting incident occurred near Nationals Park, Washington, D.C., on Thursday morning, resulting in two fatalities and two injuries. The Metropolitan Police Department confirmed the incident took place around 11:40 a.m. in the vicinity of the Friendly Food Market, located on the 300 block of Half Street at the O Street intersection. The victims, one woman and three men, were all adults.

Following the shooting, two victims were found unconscious and later pronounced dead. The health status of the remaining two injured victims remains undisclosed. The incident occurred within a five-minute walk from Nationals Park.

Authorities revealed during a media briefing that the shooting involved a stolen white Jeep Grand Cherokee. An individual inside the vehicle reportedly began discharging a firearm as the vehicle approached a corner. Eyewitness accounts suggest a significant number of shots were fired.

Law enforcement is currently on the lookout for the white 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee, described as having a sunroof, black rims, and tinted windows. The vehicle, which was involved in a prior carjacking incident, bears a Maryland license plate numbered 2FD0820.

This recent violent act contributes to the escalating crime rates in the District. Compared to 2022, violent crime has surged by 39% as of December 21, 2023. A total of 5,200 violent crimes have been reported so far this year, a significant increase from the 3,733 reported at the same time in 2022.

The rise in crime includes a 35% increase in homicides, with 265 recorded so far in 2023, compared to 197 by this date in 2022. Police data indicates that 2023 has witnessed the highest number of homicides in a single year since at least 2003.
