SANTA FE, N.M. – Local authorities in Santa Fe County confirmed on Tuesday that there were no significant findings of gas leaks or carbon monoxide in the inspection of Gene Hackman’s residence. The late Oscar-winning actor and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, were found deceased along with one of their dogs inside the property.
According to the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office, New Mexico Gas Company conducted an extensive investigation on the evening of Feb. 26. The gas company reported a minuscule gas leak of 0.33% in the air at one of the stove burners, which was deemed nonlethal. Additionally, some code enforcement violations were identified in the water heater and gas log lighters installed in three fireplaces, though not related to gas leaks or carbon monoxide.
Although the gas company’s findings are not believed to be a factor in the deaths of Gene Hackman, Betsy Arakawa, and their dog, the information has been shared with the Office of the Medical Investigator for consideration. Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office stated that foul play was not suspected from the beginning, but due to the suspicious circumstances surrounding the deaths, a thorough investigation is being conducted.
Sheriff Adan Mendoza confirmed that both Hackman and Arakawa tested negative for carbon monoxide. While the official cause of death has not been determined, autopsy and toxicology reports are pending. The investigation is ongoing, and further updates will be provided in a press conference scheduled for Friday.
Hackman, a beloved actor known for his roles in numerous films, and his wife, were discovered deceased after a maintenance worker raised concerns and notified authorities. The couple had reportedly been deceased for a while when their bodies were found by investigators.
Authorities continue to withhold specific details about the case, and the community awaits more information as the investigation unfolds. The tragic deaths of Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa have left many shocked and saddened, as they remember the couple for their contributions to the entertainment industry.
