Gaza City, Gaza Strip – Following fresh Israeli strikes in the south-west of Jabalia, residents reported overnight disturbances. Israel’s Defense Minister, Israel Katz, announced that Israeli troops will continue to occupy security zones established in Gaza even after the conflict ceases. The security zones are intended to act as a “buffer” to safeguard Israeli communities in any situation, whether temporary or permanent. According to Katz, a significant portion of Palestinian territory has been seized during the recent Israeli offensive. This move is part of the ongoing effort to pressure Hamas into releasing hostages, despite warnings from the United Nations of dire consequences.
The escalation of conflict in Gaza has drawn concern from international organizations, with MSF (Médecins Sans Frontières) highlighting the devastating impact on the Palestinian population. According to Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry, the death toll has surpassed 1,650 since the resumption of hostilities in mid-March. Hospital officials reported at least 24 Palestinian casualties in Israeli strikes across Gaza, with the majority of fatalities occurring in Gaza City. Tragically, among those killed were 10 members of the Hassouna family, including children and women.
The United Nations has revealed that Israeli military evacuation orders now cover 69% of Gaza, creating “no-go” zones along the borders with Israel and Egypt. The widespread displacement has uprooted approximately 500,000 Palestinians, leaving them with no place of safety. Israel’s military actions have resulted in the establishment of an operational security perimeter, encompassing 30% of Gaza. Katz emphasized that the IDF (Israel Defense Forces) will remain in these security zones to protect Israeli communities.
In response to the conflict, Hamas has demanded the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza as a condition for a permanent ceasefire. Meanwhile, Israeli military reservists and veterans have urged prioritizing the release of hostages over the ongoing conflict against Hamas. Despite international outcry, Israel has continued its blockade of Gaza, preventing the entry of essential supplies since early March.
The blockade has severely impacted humanitarian efforts in Gaza, leading to shortages in medical supplies and acute malnutrition among children. MSF has voiced concerns over the challenges faced in providing medical care amid insecurity and critical shortages. The organization also condemned the killing of emergency workers by Israeli forces, highlighting the disregard for humanitarian workers’ safety.
As the situation in Gaza remains volatile, negotiations for a ceasefire continue. Both sides have presented proposals, but a resolution remains elusive. The plight of hostages held by Hamas adds complexity to the conflict, with calls for their immediate release growing louder. The international community closely watches the developments, urging for a peaceful resolution to the violence in Gaza.
