Mountain View, California – Google is set to enhance the experience of young users by integrating its Gemini AI technology into devices managed through its Family Link parental control system. The company has begun notifying parents via email about this forthcoming feature, which will enable children to access Gemini on their supervised Android devices.
Gemini is designed to assist children with various tasks, including homework and storytelling. The integration aims to create an interactive learning environment tailored for younger audiences. Google has assured parents that, similar to its Workplace for Education accounts, children’s data will remain private and will not be used for AI training purposes.
However, the tech giant also issued a note of caution in its communication, advising parents to have open discussions with their children about the technology. Google acknowledged the limitations of AI by reminding users that “Gemini can make mistakes” and that children might encounter content that may not be suitable for them. To better safeguard their kids, parents are encouraged to explain the nature of AI, emphasizing its non-human characteristics and the importance of not sharing personal information.
For children under 13, the setup allows for independent access to Gemini, facilitated by Family Link. This tool provides parents with the capability to monitor their children’s screen time, establish usage limits, and filter out inappropriate content. Google spokesperson Karl Ryan confirmed that parents retain control over these settings, with the ability to deactivate access to Gemini at any time. He added that parents would receive an alert when their child accesses the AI for the first time.
